POSTAL IRREGULARITIES.
Occasionally curious revelations j are m»de as.the result of official investigations into complaints of postal irregularities. A Melbourne suburban business man lately found that various remittances from country clients had unaccountably failed to reach him, and, feeling convinced that laxity or peculation hi the post office was the cause, he lodged a complaint with the department. The matter was planed in the hands of Detective Mac Williams, of the postal staff. In pursuing his inquires, the detective ascertained that the wife of the business man had been in the habit of paying for goods that she purchased by means of postal notes that had been issued at country offices. Questioned by the detective, the wife admitted that she had opened some of her hushand's letters, and when they contanied postal notes she had used them, without mentioning the matter tu her husband. The incident is mentioned by the Melbourne authorities as being one of many in which reflections have been made without justification on the honesty of postal officials.
