PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter). Saturday. There was a splendid attendance of members at the Pahiatua Debating Society's meeting in the Foresters' Hall last evening. The President (Mr Dallaston) presided.", Keen interest was taken in the mock Parliamentary election, four candidates, Rev. Speer (Independent), Rev. Marshall (Socialise), Mr McAdam (Opposition) and, Mr. Norrell (Government), speaking for fifteen minutes, and at the conclusion questioned by those present. On a poll being taken the Rev. Speer was declared elected. Next Friday evening impromptu speeches will be held. A very pleasant evening was spent in the Mangatainoka Library Hall, last evening, when the friends of Mr %. Woods met to bid him good-bye. During the evening Mr Woods was with a handsovne clock. Good dance music was supplied hy Mr J. Brind, Mrs Wotherspoon kindly playing extras. During the evening songs were rendered by Messrs Patterson and ,'Brind. Mr W. Brown made a capable M.C. A man named James Groves, on a charge of disobeying a maintenance order, was arrepte.l in Wellington and brought before the local Court yesterday. He was remanded until Tuesday next. In connection with the Fancy Fair Guessing Competition, the weight of the sheep when killed and dressed was 57ilbs.
PAHIATUA COUNTY COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua County Council was held injthe Council Chambers to-day. There were present—Mr Thos. Hcdgins (chairman), and Crs S. Bolton, A. Ross, K. Smith, T- Quirk, A. Barrel!, H. Coom, H. Cornelius, J. D. Piper. The Health Officer reported that no cases of infectious diseases had been reported during the last month, and the public health was -satisfactory. * The Clerk of the Oroua County Council wrote asking the Council if they would assist at the official opening of the Lower Gorge bridge, and asked if they would contribute towards the cost of the ceremony. It was decided to assist in the ceremony. The Masterton Borough Council and Masterton County Council wrote regarding the estimated sum of £I,BOO contribution to the Wellington- Wairarapa Charitable Aid Board, forwarding resolutions deeming the amount to be unjust. The Pahiatua Council also decided to object to the amount. The Engineer reported that 4,194 cubic yaids of metal had been delivered on the Makuri Gorge roacl at> total cost of £1,031 0s 6d. He estimated cost of repairs to McFarlane's bridge, damaged by recent floods, at £250, and t the small bridge at Marima at £lB4.
A deputation of six settlers from Marima waited on the Council and asked that immediate steps be taken to erect protective work above Mangahao bridge at Marima, as there was danger of the bridge being left high and dry. This matter was the cause of considerable discussion, each Councillor agreeing that something should be done to protect the bridge which had cost about £4,000 to erect. Finally it was decided that the chairman, members for the riding, and any of the other Councillors who desire to do so should visit the spot in question on Wednesday next; the'engineer to prepare an estimate of the cost of the work required, and the chairman to have power to appoint a deputation to wait on the Hon. Minister of Roads and Bridges in with the matter. Messrs G. H. Smith and Herbert waited on the Council and asked if :;he Council would bear half the cost of putting in a larger culvert on the Tiraumea road if the Borough Council bore the other half. The engineer was instructed to pre. pare an estimate of the cost of the culvert required, and report at the next meeting. Two settlers from Manuaramarama also waited or. the Council and asked that their r«ad be repaired, and instructions were given that the necessary repairs be effected. Crs Quirk and Smith urged that the metalling of the main road from the B:rough to the southern boundary
be gone on with as soon as nossible. The chairman stated they would, have to keep down expenses, and it was decided to dispense with all extra teams and men as soon as possible. The Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting to £1,731 6s Id be passed for payment. FOOTBALL NOTES. A return match between Mangatainoka and Pahiatua was played on the Recreation Ground this afternoon, and was won by the former by 14 to 8. In the first spell Powell scored two tries for the winners, and in the second Cowan kicked a goal from a try scored by Cresswell, and also one from a penalty. Pahiatua's score was made up by two tries, one scored by D. Yule, and the other by Morrison, Yule kicking a goal and made a splendid attempt at the other. The play was fairly even, the visitors' forwards playing a game. It is only at rare intervals that brilliant play was witnessed on either side. Infringements were fairly frequent and players on both sides should remember that these infringements may in Cup matches loaa a match. j ' Great interest is being taken in I the forthcoming match between ' the Foresters and Druids on Wednesday next. Both lodges are putting 'in their best teams available, and > the match should be an interesting one. The Foresters will entertain the Druids at a social in the evening. m
