The health of Mrs C. Sewell, of Chester Road, Clareville, is at present causing her relatives considerable anxiety. The friends of Mrl T. Pinkney will regret to learn that his wife is lying dangerously ill at the Masterton Hospital, The Rev. J. H. Sykes, who has been on a visit to Masterton during the last few days, returned to the Upper Hutt yesterday. Prom enquiries made last avening, it was ascertained that there was -considerable improvement in the con--(Mtion of Mr W. McLaren, who was rghe victim of a serious buggy accident at Mangamahoe on Monday last. Mr D, M. Luckie, late Deputy 'Commissioner of the Government Life Insurance Department, died last night, states a Wellington Press Association telegram. Ihe deceased retired from the service last July. He -.was 81 years of age and was a very uld .resident of New Zealand, and well -known as a journalist in Nelsun, Wellington and Auckland *in the early days. He began his career in the world of action as a midshipman in r Her Majesty's Royal Navy, on the ' China and West Indian stations, and from 1839 to 1841 he was attached as a cadet to the French riding school -at St Omer. He subsequently served in India for sixteen years, laeing ensign (by purchase) in 1842, lieutenant in the December following, and • captain in 1846. He sold his commission ten or twelve years later, and in 1858 he settled in New Zealand. When the Maori rebellion of 1860 broke out he was employed by the New Zealand Government to organise the War Branch (now the Defence Offi :e), and eventually the Fox Ministry raised him to the command • of the Wangarmi district. He raised, organised, and personally drilled several troops of cavHlry in the district. Under Sir Georgd Grey, •Colonel P.ookes led the colonial forces at the capture of Wereroa pa, .in ISKS, and received the thanks of •"the Government.
