FIRE AT PALMERSTON NORTH.
By Telegraph—Press Association. PALMERSTON N., April 28. Shortly before midnight last night, a fire broke out in Malcolm's furnishing warehouse in the Square. It started in a workshop at the back, where there large quantities of tow and varnish. For some time the blaze was confined to one corner of the building, but columns of black smoke rising from the roof tjkl of the hold the flames had within. The brigade commenced operations from the reer, and, though at one time it looked as if the fire would spread, the firemen managed to confine it to Malcolm's premises. This was practically destroyed at the rear, the frontage being less damaged. The whole of the stock, valued at £4,000, was seriously injured by fire and water. The brigade worked hard and well, but it was not till about 1 a.m. that the fire was extinguished. The building belonged to Mr Childs, of the Commercial Hotel, who had only recently acquired it. It was insured for £750 in the Alliance office. Ihe stock was insured for £1,850 —£500 each in the New Zealand. Norvich Union, and Standard offices, and £350 in the Alliance. The Standard office next door was uninjured.
