CARTERTON NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter.) Wednesday. Mr W. M. Halley has donated a guinea and two gold medals for the best back and forward in the Rover Club's team. Shortly after 11 o'clock, last night, a six-roomed dwelling owned by Mr James Callis*er, of Carterton, and occupied by Mr W. J. B. Smith, was totally destroyed by fire. The building was insured in the Liverpool, London and Globe Office for £2OO. At the time of writing it is not known whether there was any insurance on the furniture.
At the annual meeting of the teachers of St. Mark's Sunday School, last evening, the annual report and balance sheet were adopted. Mr W. Tucker was re-elected secretary, and also appointed treasurer. I regret to have to record the death of another of our early pioneers in the person of Mrs M. Wil<ie, senr., who passed away at her residence, Dalefield, last evening. The deceased lady, who had reached the ripe age of 90 years, came to New Zealand in 1874- with her husband from Germany, and after landing in New Zealand, came on to Grey town, where they spent some three years, and later came to Carterton, which, of course, 35 years ago, was bush. After a brief stay they took a small holding at Dalefield, where amidst bush, they carved out a home and resided there ever since. Her husband predeceased her twelve years ago. A family of three[daughters and three sons are left to mourn their loss. The surviving members of the family are—Mesdames N. Neilson (Dalefield), Peters (Waihakeke), Lorent (Hawera), while the sons are —Andrew (Carterton), Hans (Otaki), Peter (United States). John and Matthew are the deceased members of the family.
