PAHIATUA NEWS.
{From Our Resident Reporter). Monday. To-morrow (Tuesday) promises to toe a big day at the stock sales. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., make additional entries for their sale •which is to be held at the Mangahao xoad yards, and not at the P.F.A. .yards. Candidates Cor Municipal honours are bestirring themselves, and are working hard to secure their return. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here or. Saturday evening at 10.20 p.m. At St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, last evening, the Rev. J. Chalmers Mill announced that the fourth Sunday in April was set apart by the General Assembly for Bible Sunday as a recognition of the good work done by the British and Foreign Bible Society, and from the text "Go ye therefore and teach all nations," he preached an appropriate serm on The choir rendered the anthem "i ■will extol thee." At the conclusion of the evening service a short meeting was held to discuss the best means of promoting revivals. An exceedingly sharp frost was experienced here this morning. It is stated within the last six months three miles of footpaths in the Borough have been treated with tar and sand. This system is found to be acting well, as besides making a good footpath for pedestrians, it has the beneficial effect of killing the grass which is very abundant.
Nomination papers have been issued for officers and general committee of the Pahiaf.ua-Akitio A. and P. Association. The success of the first Show will depend greatly 011 the officers and committee elected, and as the farmers will naturally be the cries that will receive the greatest benefit, it is to be hoped th i :y will be well represented on the governing body. At the conclusion of Mr J. D. Wilson's address, last evening, the eighteen candidates for Municipal honours were invited on to the stage to give a short address, but only Messrs P. Debreceny. F. Milne, W. Norrell, Osburn-Lilly, and J. Richardson, availed themselves of the opportunity. I understand that a similar invitation will be extended at the close of Mr D. Crewe's meeting on Tuesday evening. A meeting of dairy farmers took place at the Konini* Hall to consider the advisability of asking the Bal lance Dairy Company to add ch°esernaking phints to their different factories. The situation was discussed and it was decided to hold a meeting in the Konini Hall on Friday evening to further discuss the matter, and in the meantime to gather all the in-
formation possible regarding the cheese industry, and it was decided to ask the Chairman of Directors? and the Secretary of the Mangaramarama Cheese Factory to be present. The annual meeting of the Bush Rugby Union was held at Hamua on Saturday evening. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr S. Bolton; President, Mr M. Vance,; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr F. Morris; Delegate to New Zealand Rugby Union, Mr E. Darley; Auditors, Messrs Twentyman and Anderson. Two notices of motion were given as to removing the headquarters of the Union, one that headquarters be removed to Pahiatua, and the other to Hukanui. This matter will be dealt with on May Bth. Mr H. A. Thomson, of the "Central Book Arcade," has opened up a splendid lot of post cards, and a varied assortment of glassware, all of which will bear the full test of inspection. Since taking over this business some seven months ago, Mr Thomson has with unsparing energy built up a splendid business. A glance at his glassware will satisfy the mo«i sceptical.
