PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Thursday. Harvest thanksgiving services in connection with St. Peter's Church • will be held in the Church this evening. Mr Burge, the Stationmaster at Pahiatua, left to-day on his annual holiday which he intends to spend in the Auckland district. During Mr - Burge's absence, Mr H. Bennet will take charge. At the general meeting of the A. and P. Association on Tuesday evening it was decided that the title of the Association be the PahiatuaAkitio Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The first annual meeting will be held on May 18th, when the election of officers for the ensuing year will take place. The continuous rain of yesterday flooded all the rivers and streams in the district, a large area of the •low-lying land between .Scarborough and Mangamaire being under water. The County Engineer informed me at neon to-day that the bridge over " the Mangatainoka river on the Scar-borough-Konini road had dropped four feet at the northern approach, and part of the approach had also Been washed out. The road will be closed for traffi ■ » « i' -f feared that should the river rise any higher the whole of the bridge will be swept away. Several Jogs were washed on to the roads in some of the lower parts, and have since been removed. Should thia bridge be swept away it will cause considerable inconvenience, besides costing about £6OO to

reconstruct. The contractor for the four bridges at Ballance has commenced carting the timber for the work, which will be started immediately. This will be gratifying news to settlers of Ballance. A gentleman who has just ridden in from Marima states that a slip has occurred on the road between Mangamaire railway station and the Mangahao bridge, which will suspend vehicular traffic for a time. The fint shot of the Mayoral election was fired last evening by Mr D. Crewe, the present Mayor, in -the Olympic Theatre. Mr Crewe reviewed the work done during the last twelve months, his remarks meeting with general approval. Residents who were unable to hear Mr Crewe's address last evening will, I understand, have an opportunity of hearing another address on Tuesday evening. Mr J. D. Wilson, the other candidate, will speak on Friday evening. Before the- winter . sets in an important item to be studied is the choosing of strong and serviceable boots that will stand the test of the wet weath3r. Mr J. K. Carpenter, our busy "Bootman," is- to the fore with a good selection of footwear suitable for the coming season, including strong boots for country wear, gum boots and goloshes, evening mshoes and warm slippers. Mr Carpenter cordially inspection.

MANGATAINOKA NOTES. Mr Hill, who for some considerable time has been connected with the firm of Walkley and Hill, and who is severing his connection with the firm, was entertained this evening and presented with a gold Albert chain and pendant.. Mr Hill is very popular here, and has always taken a keen interest in the welfare of the district, and his loss to this district will be great. A team of footballers from Dannevirke will play a local team on the Domain on Saturday afternoon.

WOODVILLE NOTES. There is likely to be keen interest taken in the Municipal election. Mr McKibbin has been returned unopposed as Mayor. The following have been nominated for the nine vacancies as Councillors:—Messrs J. A. Nichollas, A. W. Rapley, A. Kirkpatrick, E. Harding, J; V. Lawrence, H. Burnett, H. P. Home, A. Rosenberg, G. P. Smith, J. Harding, T. H. B. Tyerman, M. Whitehead, and G. H. Redwood. Misses Grant and Stace are left in the final for the Fountain trjphy, which will be played off at the local tennis courts.
