PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). j Wednesday. The fortnightly meeting of Court Pahiatua, A.0.F., was held last evening, Bro. G. Yule, C.R., presid ing ordinary routine business was transacted, and it was decided to accept the invitation of the Druids to a social evening on Thursday week. The Pahiatua Fire brigade met in the brigade room last evening, Capt. McAlister being in the chair. Miss Cameron's offer to inaugurate an art union for the benefit of the brigade's lunds was accepted with thanks. The secretary was instructed to write and inform some of the members of the brigade, who' are not attending practises regularly that they are breaking, rule 21 of the by-laws, and are liable to be struck off the roll. The captain of the Mangatainoka Football Club informed me this morning that a match between A and B teams would take place on the Domain ground on Saturday afternoon.

PAHIATUA RACING CLUB. The Pahiatua Racing Club held a meeting in the Commercial Hotel, thu President (Mr Breeds) presiding. Mr P. E. Deb>-eceny',s offer to take over Mr Sandon's debenture vvae> accepted, find iVlr A. atjox's resignation was'accepted with regret. The matter of fixing the dates for the next Pahiatua meeting was left in the hands of a sub-committee, the secretary in the meantime to find out the dates of the Wellington and Foxton meetings in January next. The Golf Club were granted permission to use part of the Club's ground for golf purposes during the coming winter free of charge, arrangements to be made next year regarding a lease to the Golf Club. The farm account from Septsmber 1908 until April 20th showed a profit of £79 3s Bd, and about 300 head of sheep are still on the farm. One member asked if it would not be advisable to lease the ground, but several other members who have an intimate knowledge of tarming stated they had done exceedingly well considering the bad stats of the fat stock market. The .President said it had come to his knowledge that the track was being used by private individuals who were not entitled to use it. Considerable discussion ensued, and it was finally decided to make the gates secure. BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION. The election of Mayor and nine Borough Councillors, which is to take place on Wednesday next/ is creating keen interest, and no "less than eighteen gentleman have been nominated for the position of Councillors. The fight for the Mayoralty will be a straight-out one between the present Mayor, Mr D. Crewe and Mr J. D. Wilson, who has before occupied the chair. The following will contest seats as Councillors:— Mesprs R. W. Ashcroft, T. Boyd, E. C. Cox, I). P. Davidson, G. L. Drew, P. E. Debrecenj, E. B. Hare, F. G. Milne, W.W. McCardle, W. Norrell, J. Os-borne-Lilly, J. Richardson, F. E. Storey, J. W. Sturton, J. A. Walsh, J. B. Westlake and A. Weston. Seven of the above, Messrs Cox, Davidson, Milne, McCardle, Sturton, Drew, and Westlake, are old Councillors, Mr Bisdee being the only old Councillor not seeking re-elec-tion. WOODLANDS HUNT CLUB. The opening meeting of the above Club took place at "Riesdale," Mr T. Mexted's property, this \ afternoon, and although rain fell incessantly both in the [morning and afternoon, there was a good attendance of huntsmen, who braved the elements to take part in the opening meet. A number of onlookers also attended, amongst whom were several members of the fair sex. About twenty-five followed the hounds, including the Master on Miss Hippo, Captain J B. White on Nomad, Stanley White on Lady Ona, W. Naylor on Papakura colt, E. W. Morrison on Stella, H. Mossop on Lord Ullin, G. Main on Molly Fisher, T. Milson on Darkie, G. Watson on Kerryconnor, W. Singleton on Papakura filly, R. Hollis on Miss Rodney. After the meet, Mr and Mrs Mexted kindly invited the huntsmen and visitors to afternoon tea, which was much appreciated, and at the conclusion the Master, Mr Rodney, heartily thanked Mr and Mrs Mexted on behalf of the assembled guests for their hospitality, and also stated that he was extremely pleased with the large

number of sports who had turned out in such bad weather, and hoped the. present season wojld be a very successful one. He also stated that he hoped to see a number of ladies following during the season, and asked the gentlemen members to show them every consideration. Captain J. B. Whyte also a few words with regard to the hospitality, of Mr and Mrs Mexted, assisted by the Misses Mexted, which made "Rilsdale" one of the popular runs of the Woodlands Hunt Club. lie. also drew the younger followers' attention to the fact that discipline was as necessary on the hunting field as in the ranks of a ntgiment, and that they should take notice of whatever they were told on the field, either by the Master, Deputy Master, Huntsman, or whoever may be in charge. Mr Rodney's vote of thanks was heartily applauded. The secretary, Mr Arnold Weston, was in attendance, and made known that one more run would be allowed, and then the yearly subscriptions would have to be paid before anyone could follow the hounds. The Huntsman (Mr H. E. Russsl!) had the pack well under control.
