VARIOUS PROPHESIES. PROBABLE STRUGGLE FOR BREAD. PUBLIC INDIGNATION AGAINST GAMBLING ON FOODSTUFFS.. MR PATTEN SEEKS PROTECTION. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright. Received April 18, 4.30 p.m. NEW YORK, April 17. Mr Patten prophesies that before many monthß the people of Europe will struggle for bread. Mr Patten has engaged a detective to protect him owing to public indignation against his gambling in foodstuffs. Mr J. Wilson, Secretary of Agriculture at Washington, states that Mr Patten is reckoning the supplies too low. Only one wheat corner succeeded, that conducted by Joseph in Egypt. Mr J. J. Hill prophesies that wheat will not return to low prices for a Jong time. LONDON, April 17. The "Economist" states that Mr Patten's corner is far less important to the British working classes than any otf?er big past manipulation. It was evident that the high prices in London must be attributed to other causes than the Chicago manipulation. Beerbohm's wheat estimates are for four months.
