MASTERTON HOMING PIGEON CLUB.

YOUNG BIRD RACE. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club got oft" a young bird race from Palmerston North yesterday. Twentythree birds, representing seven lofts, took part, aiid a very close finish was the result; in fact, the judge had to do some fine calculating before he could announce the result. In three cases the number of yards per minute at which the birds travelled was exactly the same, and it was only the. slight difference in the fractions that enabled the judge to separate them. The winner's time of 1 hour 38 minutes was not considered fast, but the fact that the birds had to face a head wind over the whole journey would easily account for the slower velocity. Mr.F. B. Rosson acted as judge, and the following is the result: — Mr J. Bradbury's red chequered hen "Smokeless," 749.9 yards i per minute, 1 MrH. M. Wilton's blue chequered pied hen "Radium," 747.7 yards per minute 2 Mr H. W. Lett's blue cock "Lord Roberts," 747.5 yards per minute 3 Mr W. Hoar's blue chequered cock "Skyscraper," 747.3 yards per minute 4 The winner takes Mr Home's trophy (51b box of tea). There will be no race next Thursday, owing to there being no half holiday, but on the following Thursday the Club will hold a race from Feilding, the trophy being 6 dozen bottles of curdials presented by Mr Joseph Dixon.
