ASSOCIATION MATCH. MASTERTON v. PETONE. The Masterton Association Football Club opened the season yesterday, in very promising fashion, by defeating Petone, at Lansdowne, after a keenly contested game. The following were the teams:—Petone.—Joyce, goal; Fitzgerald and Hartley, backs: Hawkins, Nunn, Renai, half backs; Taplin, Joneg, Wright, Ingram and Bail, forwards. Masterton.—Marsh, goal; Sirowbridge and Lawrence, backs; JNicol, Robertson, Elder, half backs; Miller, Truscotv, Smiturst, Shepherd and Smith, forwards. Lawrence won the toss, and the visitors kicked off with the eun in their eyes. The local players were aggressive from the start, and came within an ace of scoring. Hartley relieved, and put the Petone men going, Taplin testing Marsh with a good shot, which was well saved. Masterton warmed to their work, and from a neat pasu by Robertson, Smith beat the opposing backs and opened the score. Combined efforts by Wright, Ingram, and Ball resulted in play being under the home citadel, but Elder saved by conceding a corner. Give and take play ensued, until an infringement by the visitors of the handling rule gave Lawrence the opportunity of increasing the lead with a well-directed 3hot. Half time arrived with the home team leading by two goals. Upon resuming, Petone made desperate efforts to scorr, and were rewarded in due course, through the tricky play of Ball, who beat Marsh
with a capital shot. A few moments later Smith further increased the local team's lead by another goal from close quarters. Time was called with Wairarapa men busily defending. The final score was: — Masterton 3 goals. Petone 1 goal. The game was contested in excellent spirit, and although the players were not in the best of condition, some good football was shown. Petone had good men in Hartley, Hawkins, Renai, laplin, and Ball, whilst Masterton were sbly represented by Marsh, Lawrence, Robertson, Shepherd, ard Smith. Mr Leighton controlled the match in his usual impartial manner.
