RACING.
, WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB. AUTUMN MEETING. For the first day's racing at Tauherenikau dull weather was experienced, but fortunately the threatening rain held off. The convincing ground and appointments generally were seen at their best, and the course was in splendid order, some very fast times being registered especially in the Nursery, Wardell and Makahi Hack Handicaps. The attendance of the public was well up to the record of past Easter Saturdays. Mr E. A. Laery, Secretary, had all the general arrangements in connection with the fixture well up to date, and a commendable feature was the promptitude shown in the starting of the various events well to notified times. Mr J. H. Tilson was successful in the starting .with the exception of the last race, when the field of thirteen left the barrier in straggling order. Thirteeen bookmakers—six inside and seven outside —were licensed, and they put forth their best endeavours to secur a share of betting favours. Notwithstanding this the sum of £5,148 was put through the totalisator. Complaints were made relative to the insufficient number of pay out windows in use at the totalisator house, and the fact that after the last race there were only two assistants to pay out considerably over two hundred successful investors, was adversely commented upon by many who wished to reach Faatberston in time for the outgoing trains. The Greytown Brass Band, under the conductorship of Mr H. T. Rees, rendered an appreciated programme of selections. The racing throughout was decidedly interesting, and the finishes in the Te Waka Welter, Wangaimoana and Nursery Handicaps were most exciting, and culled forth the best efforts of the riders, who had to fight out the contests right to the post.
The programme opened with the Hack Hurdles. Only twu—Lebeccio and Sfcraban—were saddled up for the event. The former fell at the fourth nurdle, giving F. Wbitehouse a nasty shaking, and consequently Straban had only to canter round to win. Lebeccio was caught and ridden over the course by S. Crawford. The Maiden Hack—seven starters —was looked upon as a good thing for the Birkenhead gelding, Te Ru. Well handled by T. Pritchard he scored very comfortably. Kimmerian, the sister to Full Rate, ran disappointingly, but Hilarian v showed plenty of pace at the finish, and raced into second place. The full field of seven went out to contest the Easter Handicap. Maiora was made favourite, with Silken Rein and Effort about equally supported. Merrivonia, Silken Rein and Maiora were prominent in the early stages of the race, but at the roadway Gaelic, at the minimum weight 6.7, ran to the front, and coming on in good style won easily from the fast finishing effort. The winner was ridden very capably by W. Bennett, who on Saturday's form promises to be a successful lightweight rider.
Castiglione, Sealer and Knight Commander were most strongly supported for the Hack Welter. In a keenly fouyht-out finish victory went to Sealer, who scored by a head from Diplomatic.
On the strength of good track form A boriginal was made favourite for the Wangaimoana Handicap. He and Da'sy Paul cut out the running, but the finish resulted in a stirring one between San Fernando and Silken Rein," the former winning by half a length.
Kiltie Lass was quickest out in the Nursery Handicap. At the top of the straight she was joined by Aema, and the pair raced to the post stride for stride. Kirk rode one of his best finishes on Kiltie Lass, who scored, amidst excitement by a head. This made the third win during the day for the owner-trainer, Mr James Cress, the Eastar Handicap winner, Gaelic, being owned by him, while Sealer and Kiltie Lass are members of his team. The trio were brought out in excellent condition, and Mr Cress was warmly congratulated by many sportsmen on his success. In a field of five Iney was selected ,as the most likely winner in the Wardell Handicap. She went out' a little sore, and was perhaps short of work. When it came to racing nothing bad a chance with the Advance mare, Advantage, who quickly raced to the front and wen easily by two lengths. The Makahi Hack brought out the biggest field of the day, thirteen lining up to the barrier. After a long delay at the post Andrew Mack and Axite were quickest out, and led the field Jto the straight, wnere Toanera and Leahora moved up. Halfway down Toanga shot out"and scored easily by two lengths in fast time.. The following were the resutls: —

NOTES. Silken Rein, Merrie Rose and Aboriginal, who Jhad been doing good qrack work ran disappointingly. The San Fran—jLilian gelding, Hilarian, is improving with every gallop. Masterton trained horses scored three wins on Saturday. Kimmerian is still a disappointment, and is not quite as brilliant as her brother, Pull Rate. Castiglior.e ran a smart five furlongs in the Te Waka Welter, but failed to see out the seven furlongs. Sealer ran generously in the Hack Welter, and has soon repaid his purchase money. R. Hatch rode three good winning races on San Fernando, Advantage and Toanga. Kelso is not partial to weight, and ran a very ordinary race in the Wardell Handicap. Toanga is proving a very smart sprinter. His win in the Makahi Hack was full of merit. Leahora is decidedly speedy. When a little more hardened in condition the Lethe mare will put up good performances. The chances of Daisy Paul and Aboriginal in the Wangaimoana Handicap were affected by the pair racing to the front, and running each other out, thus allowing Silken Rein and San Fernando to settle the contest. Kiltie Lass won the half-mile Nursery in 48 3-ssec. This will take some beating. The hurdler Sen Sim was being ridden about on Saturday by the clerk of the course. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY.
