MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING OP WORKS COMMITTEE.

The Works Committee o! the Masterton Borough Council met last evening, there being present—Crs Pauling (who was voted to the chair, in the unavoidable absence of the Mayor), Yarr, Prentice, Elliott, Pragneil, Morris, Haughey. The Mayor wrote suggesting that the Council offices be closed from Thursday next till the following Monday week, and that the ordinarymeeting of the Council, which would take place next Tuesday, be allowed to lapse. The Council adopted the suggestion of the Mayor. The Borough Treasurer submitted a statement of his'finances to the end of the year, which was received. The statement revealed that on the year's transactions the Borough overdraft had been'reduced by £2,038 14s 7d. Tfie Town Clerk submitted a statement of his receipts and payments down to March 31fet, which were re« ceived and adopted. Accounts amounting to £763 17s 3d were submitted and passed for payment. On the motion of Cr Pauling, seconded by Cr Morris, it was resolved, on the report of the Borough Engineer, to reconstruct a footpath from Walton's Avenue to Short Street along High Street, at an estimated cost of £l2. An application was received from the engineer acting for the Solwe y Estate syndicate, asking an acceptance of the dedication of new streets from High Street into York Street. 1 The Council referred the application to the Engineer, with power to act, an intimation being that the dedication would be accepted, provided the syndicate feaced the streets.

A letter was received from the Premier, conveying his thanks for the Borough's resolution approving of hia action in offering a Dreadnought to the British Navy. An application for the extension ot the Borough sewers into Timothy Street was not granted.

A communication was received from Mr O'Regan, on behalf of tie Friendly Societies' Council, askir.g for the patronage of the Borougti Council at a football tournament on the Showgrounds on May Ist, in aid of hospital, and a demonstration at the Park on the following day. This patronage the Council had great pleasure in giving. / . A claim for compensation by Messrs Lyttle Bros. was submitted. The Council instructed the Town Clerk to inform Messrs Lyttle Bros, that- the Council do not admit the amount of the claim. The Borough Engineer was, on the motion ot Cr Prentice, instructed to form a footpath ir. Pownall Street from Cornwall Street, as it was in his opinion necessary, so as to afford temporary relief to residents, as far as the house in occupation by Mr Wickens.
