MR FISHER'S POLICY CRITICISED. COSTLY DEFENCE SCHEME. Received April 6, 10.5 a.m. SYDNEY, April 6. The State Treasurer (Hon. T. Waddell), criticising tin Federal Premier's policy, declares his defence scheme to be elaborate and costly. It would be a sad day for Australia if the people should be ground down like the people of Europe. The Boers bad taught them the lesson how they could reasonably secure by an inexpensive system of defence. Mr Fisher's {.financial proposals, the Treasurer declared, were quite inadequate. It was a serious matter tor the States to be deprived of their fair share of indirect taxation, but it became more serious still to have the Federal Government monopolising direct taxation.

It is understood that Mr Fisher declines tD call the Federal Parliament together early. It will meet on May 26tb, which is slightly earlier than usual.
