MASTERTON BOROUGH FINANCES.

THE YEAR'S WORK

The following statement was made by the Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollings) at the meeting of the Works Committee of the Masterton Borough Council last evening

The year was commenced with an overdraft at the bank . upon. General Accounts totalling £5,530 12s 4d. The year has ended with an overdraft at the bank upon General Accounts totalling £3,491 17s 9d, revealing that the Baiik overdraft has during the year been reduced by no less than £2,038 14s 7d. This satisfactory result has not been accomplished by withholding payirent of accounts as the end of the year approached, and I have the assurance ot the Town Clerk that all outstanding accounts were settled down to the date of the last meeting, and that upon all general accounts the outstanding indebtedness the Borough at the 31st of March last does not exceed £2OO. The loan accounts are in credit £3,690 3s, so that upon all accounts the Bank was ' indebted to the Borough at the 31st of March last £l9B .;5s 3d. In addition to which there were sums at that date in the hands of the Treasurer received too late for hanking amounting to £il6. Notwithstanding the reduction of £2,038 in overdraft amongst others, the following capital works have been effected out of revenue: —Loan poll expenses £52, expert's report on drainage £75, Cornwall Street sewer £4O, alterations and improvements at sewage disposal works £270, Lincoln Road sewer, portion relaid to replace leaky sewer, £B9, purchase of land to extend Herbert Street into Makora Street £l2O, new intake at watern/rorfcs £a3,4 ? new valves for fire purposes £233, expert's report on waterworks"£loo. —Total, £1,313. So that but for those works the overdraft would have been reduced by £3,151.
