PHYSICAL CULTURE.

A PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATION. There was a large attendance at the Y.M..C.A. rooms \ last evening, .'•to witness the practical demonstration of physical culture by Mr R. 0. Jarrett, the chair being occupied by Mr P. L. Hollings. As a preliminary, Mr Jarrett gave j a short address on physical culture in genera], and also touched on the importance of deep breathing. With the assistance of his two boys, Mas- j ters Claude and Bert, wonderfully well developed lads, aged 11 and 12 years, respectively, Mr Jarrett gave a most interesting demonstration in breathing exercises for the benefit of the school boys present. Mr Jarrett then gave an exhibition of chest expansion, expanding ten inches and breaking a 12 gauge jack chain, and also snapping the links apart of a 10 gauge jack chain. JThe next item on the programme was weight lifting, which was followed by' a series of exercises in the Sandowy method of development. In the latter exercise the demonstrator showed a most remarkable control of the muscles, every movement being taken with the greatest ease. The exercises /showing the development of the abdominal muscles was most interesting and the method of measuring the capacity of the lungs by means of the spirometer was also shown. The demonstration concluded with a brilliant exhibition of ball punching. At the conclusion of the .entertainment a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Jarrett, on the motion of Mr J. Hunter.
