MASTERTON RACING CLUB.
| AUTUMN MEETING. SECOND DAY. The threatening rain held off during the greater part of the day, but a light shower about three o'clock made the track a little slippery. The arrangements in connection with the meeting were again very satisfactory, and the races wererun off punctually throughout. The starting was not as even as on Thursday, some of the despatches being somewhat of a straggling order. The racing was of an interesting nature right through, and the'first day's form was well sustained in most of the events, one exception being that of Maiora, who ran badly in the Waipipi Cup, bur. won iha Autumn Handicap very comfortably. .Racing commeoncad with .the Hack Hurdlss. The field of seven included Diplomatic and Nadyne, - who were not raced over the obstacles on the first day and they finished firs'- and second. Kelso was made a firm favourite for the Telephone Hindicap, but he did not get away well, and Toa Tuhi cut out the running. When well m the straight Sunbonnet put in her claim and holding the opposition safe won by a length and ahalf.
Pikiho was the popular selection i for the Hack Scurry. After Campaign had showed the way for two furlongs Leahora raced to the front, and from this out had the issue well in hand, and won by two lengths from the favourite, with Campaign third. The High-weight Handicap brought out six starters and backers were divided in their opinions as to whether Nadyne or Storm light was the e be3t investment. Then the ianciers of Knight Commander came into the betting market, and he eventually started favourite. Hilarian showed a lot of pace to the tup turn, where Knight Commander took charge. Some interference took place in the straight between Hilarian and Nayne, and the favourite won by a length. The Stewards held an inquiry into the running of Hilanan and Nadyne. The evidence went to show that Hilarian had bumped the latter, who was endeavouring to take up the inside running. The Stewards cautioned Mr T. Ray and Mr J. Allen, the riders." ; Only four horses were saddled up for the Autumn Handicap. Maiora was best backed and never "left therace in doubt when it came to gallon ing. Wai wars ware and Royal M iid were spiritedly supported for the Railway Hack Handicap, and they finished first and second. In the Final Welter Kurawaka ran one of her best races, and splendidly handled by- C. Jenkins, won byja neck from Lamsdorff. 1 J A] :hough carrying 9st Iney had too much pace for the other four starters in the Telegraph Hack, and scored from Conquer,, who cut out most of the running.
The sum of £3,140 was.'put through the jotalisator, and the bookmakers did g'»od business. In most of the events', they offered greater odds than obtainable' on the machine, and consequently were largely patronised. The successful trainers during the day were:—J. Gravestock, M. McGrath, N. Williams, J. Ayres, J. McLaughlin, A. Godfrey, J. Prosser and T. Butler. The winning riders were:—-G. Price, two wins; J. Lyford, H. Cairris, W. Kirk, C. Jenkins, E. Lowe and Mr J. Tilyard, one win each. In deciding to ! take no action in connection with the inquiry into the running of Waikaraka in the March Handicap on the first day of the Masterton .meeting, the Stewards were unanimous in the opinion that the horse had been honestly ridden out and there was no ground for complaint.
