SPORTING.

KACING.

TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland"). Owing to the blsak and cold weather yesterday morning, very few horses were worked at Opaki before breakfast. M. McGrath's team were first on the ground. The work was done on the outside of the course proper, which was in good order, considering the heavy rain that had fallen during the night. Osiris and Moloch put in once round, finishing up fast. Both galloped well, and are in fine racing trim. Sunbonnet and the Conqueror—Lady Principal colt were associated in a half-mile scrint. The mare was better suited to the going, and appeared to hold her companion fairlv safe. Kurawaka and Aberration ran six furlongs. The former galloped freely, and had slightly the best of the gallop. Waimaria and Forest Queen put in good working exercise, and Tumut put in a fast four furlongs. Several horses executed unimportant, gallops, later in the morning. Letherin has changed hands, her new owner being a well-known Masterton sportsman, who will spare no pains to bring the Lethe gelding fit and well to the post in a few weeks. Aberration, by The Possible—Kie Kie, is to be submitted for sale,by public auction at the Opaki course to-morrow by Mr J. R. Nicol. The sale is taking place in order to close a partnership account. Aberration is .in racing condition, and will race at the meeting. W. Cave has sold the Work* man—Seal gelding, Sealer, which will race in the name of his new owner in the Bracelet Handicap at the Masterton meeting. J. McLaughlin arrived yesterday with Maiora, and Rock Ferry. The pair are looking really well. Considerable interest is being taken by sportsmen in the probable running of Kelso, who will race in the March Handicap with 6st 111b. At Woodville the Petroleum gelding carried 9st, and ran six furlongs in fast time. It now remains to be seen whether he can show similar form in open company. <

The Nelson meeting, at which the Wairarapa horses Silken Rein, Purakau, Thera, Lucretius and Gaelic are engaged, opens to-morrow.
