IN THE FAR SOUTH.
LIEUT. SHACKLETON'S EXPEDITION. Received March 24, 10.55 p.m. LONDON. March 24. Her Majesty Queen Alexandra has, through the "Daily Mail," forwarded hearty congratulations to Lieut. Shackleton on his great achievement. Lieut. Shackleton's cablegram to the "Daily Mail" states that Messrs Adams, Broeklehurst, David, Mackay, Marshall and Marson, left Cape Boyd on March sth to ascend Mt. Erebus, which they climbed on the j 7th with a sledge, carrying the I equipment on their backs. At an altitude of 9,500 feet the thermometer registered 5u degrees below freezing point. After a violent blizzard lasting thirty hours, the party reached the old crater on the 9th. They found unique fumaroles or smoke holes. The crater was filled with felspar, crystals, pumice and sulphur. The summit was reached on the 10th. There they found an active crater half-mile in diameter and 800 feet deep with volumes of steaim and sulphurous gas rising to a height of 2,000 feet. After making collections the party glissaded down and reached Cape Boyd on March 11th.
