PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter)

Friday

SCARBOROUGH FOOTPATH SOCIAL. Although last evening ,was any-thn-.V; hut enticing for people to journey any distance to a social, yet the popularity of the footpath scheme betwceis Pahiatua and the Pahiatua railway station was plainly shown by the large number of Pahiatua residents who attended the social at Scarborough; in fact, in the early part of the evening there was not sufficient seating accommodation for the ladies who were present, and / visitors atttended from the neigh-

bouring districts. A splendid progvvr.nw had been arranged by Mrs

Mai,c!;i and Mr C. Bluett, and the excellent supper provided was attend;-::'; Lo by. a lacies' committee.

After flipper Mr Godfrey Taylor, of the Social Committee, explained the footpath scheme, and thanked Mr Ross. M.P., for securing a Government grant, the Borough and County Council, snd one and all, for the splendid assistance they had rendered f o further the interests of this much needed worl;. H>- als'j state that ;n all probability the footpath would be completed before the winter. Mr Sturton, a member of the Borough Council, said a few words, and remarked on the kindly feeling that had always existed between the residents of Scarborough and Pahiatua. Mr Milne, County Engineer, also spoke.

During the evening songs were well rendered by Mrs (Jsburn-Lilly, Miss Dunning, Messrs Green, J. W. Sturcon, Hill, Lawton and C. Mijls, and a quartette by Misses Sayers and Redwood, and Messrs Green and Mills. An item not to be forgotten was a violin solo by an eld veteran, Mr Jessop, who in the early days fought in the Maori war, and in response to a vigorous encore Mr Jessop sang a song. - Mr G. Oxley gave a splendid recitation. The accompaniments for tba singers were played by Mrs Malcoim, and Misses Allen and Dunining, while the music for the supplied gratuitously by Mr C. *A. Bluett's string band. Extras were kindly played by Mrs Malcolm, Miss Allen and Messrs C, A. Hicks and C. Mills, and Mr A. White made a capable Itf.C. The committee and the popular secretary, Mr J. Brechin, wish, through the Age columns, to tender their thanks to those who so kindly helped to make the evening such a decided success.

GENERAL. • There was a good attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Druids' Lodge, last evening, Bru. .Swigg, A.D., presiding. Five new members,'.vvere initiated and three proposed for membership. It was decided to open the Lodge meetings at 7.30 until the end of the winter, and also to hold a social evening after the ordinary Lodge business was transacted on next Lodge night. The want of a hall forjsocial purposes was keenly felt at Scarborough last evening, and judging by the interest taken in socials at that place the residents of Scarborough should move in the direction of building a hall and so be on a par wittf the neighbouring districts. Keen interest is evinced* amongst cricketers in the Mangatainoka— Pahiatua match, which, weather permitting, will take place at Mangatainoka to-morrow (Saturday) aftercoon. The team to represent Pahiatua will be picked from the following:—Messrs Tipping, Griffiths, Speers, Hawkins, A. and R. Welch, Wallis, Tucker, Britland, Hutton, Finch, Shaw, Jolly. Mr Peter Tulloch, who for some time past has been associated with Tullock Bros., has started business on his own account as a stock, land and estate agent, in offices next to Mr Osburn-Lilly, solicitor. Mr Peter Tulloch is well-known in this district, having resided here for a number, of years, and has for sale a good selection of sheep and dairy farms of various sizes. Those in search of land would do well to write to him for further particulars which he will forward at once.

Should the weather prove favourable to-morrow (Saturday) a team from the Pahiatua Tennis Club will journey to Wooclville to play a match against the Woodville Club.
