CARLTON v. CARTERTON. The final match for the Thursday Championship was commenced on the Park Oval, yesterday afternoon, between the Carlton and Carterton teams. The wicket was sodden.owing to the rain, and Carterton winning the toss put Carlton in to bat. The opening batsmen were Madsen and F. Welch, Maunsell and Phelps having charge of the bowling. At 11 F. Welch was bowled by Maunsell without scoring. Prow joined IVadsen, but at 14 Maunsell got Madsen, who had played a neat innings for 11. A. Hoar was the next batsman and the pair settled down to play carefully. Over alter over was sent down with but few runs going down to the batsmen. Both were determined to take no risks, and gradually the score crept to 56, when Hoar was bowled by F. Fairbrother, after compiling 25. Though the batsman gave three chances he nevertheless played good cricket. Styles joined Prow, but at 58 the latter, who had played a splendid innings for 18, was bowled by C. Williams. • Moss was next in, and quickly got to work, knocking up ten in four hits. At 79 Phelps bowled him. Styles was joined by Voyce. The latter just got going when he put one into Elliott's hands after making five, the score being 84. L. Boyd partnered Styles, and'some pretty cricket resulted. Repeated changes of bowling had no effect, : and runs came freely. Boyd hit a grand six off Maunsell. The score was 112 before F. Fairbrother bowled Boyd. The latter's score was 17, and a very pretty innings it was too. T. Hoar's advent to the wickets livened play up considerably. The veteran went at the bowling, and ran up 12 in four hits, being eventually caught by Smart, off a big hit. The score was 126. N. Boyd joined Styles, who was playing speJndid cricket. Mainly due to the latter's efforts the scored reached 147. Then Styles hit a ball which struck Feast hard on the head. The latter was stunned and fell. Both players started to run, but seeing Feast fall they stopped and before Boyd could complete the run Hart had the bails off. E. Welch was last man in and he and Styles carried the score to 165, at which total Maunsell bowled Styles. The latter had compiled 47 in excellent style. He made a number of pretty strokes, and also scored several boundaries. He was about two hours at tbe wickets, and gave one chance towards the close of his innings. E. Welch was not out with two to his credit. ! Carterton fielded well at the commencement of Carlton's innings, but from sixty onwards the fielding was very poor. Maunsell and Fairbrother were the best of the bowlers. The former bowled splendidly at the start, the wicket assiating him.
