RAILWAYS IN CHINA.
NON-OBSERVANCE OF A CONTRACT. BRITISH REPRESENTATIONS. Received March 17, 8.20 a.m. LONDON, March 16. The British Government has authorised Sir J. Nr Jordan, Minister Plenipotentiary at Pekin, to make representations to China with regard to the non-observance of the Shanghai—Ningpo Railway contract.
Dr G. E. Morrison, "The Times" correspondent, recently visited the Shanghai-Hangchau-Ningpo railway. He stated that the million and a half of British money invested is being squandered owing to the Chinese disregarding the contract requiring British supervision and the use of British material. Dr. Morrison also stated that every important financial stipulation in the contract had been violated. TIENTSIN—YANG-TSZE LINE. Received March 17, 9 a.m. LONDON, March 15, China is taking active steps to meet the British wishes and prevent obstruction of the British section of the Tientsin—Yang-Tsze Railway construction works.
