ERUPTION OF NGAURUHOE.
AN ASCENT OP THE MOUNTAIN. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 14. Messrs E. Desterre and G. Borne, two Auckland pressmen, reached the summit of Ngauruhoe early yesterday morning. The latter part of the ascent was made in fog. Tne crater was obscured by steam and fog, but occasionally a momentary glimpse was obtained of the centre of [the activity. There was a continual roar from the steam vents on the floor of the crater, and every now and then showers of stones and sand. A portion of the wall of the crater seemed to be missing, but whether it had actually been blown out or whether that portion was still there or concealed by the biilows of steam it was impossible to say. No lava streams were seen. On a comparison of activity noted during the past four days it is evident that the volcano is quietening.
