CARTERTON NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter.) Saturday. iThere was a good attendance at the Parkvale Hali last evening, when a social and dance in aid of the Hall funds was held. . Dancing, interspersed with songs ard step dances, was kept up until the early hours of this morning. An excellent supper was provided and much appreciated. There was a splendid fall of rain lere to-day, and will do much good. Matters municipal are very quiet here at present, and rumour has it that it will be difficult to find a Council. It is to be hoped that the rumour will prove incorrect. Sunday. A church parade of the Carterton Rifle Volunteers was held this morning at St. Mark's Church, where the R3V. R. Young preached an eloquent sermon appropriate to the occasion. The Carterton Brass Band, under Bandmaster R. Crawley, also attended the parade, playing the Company to and from the Church. Captain H. F. Skey and Lieutenants W. Toomath and H. Hart were in command.
Dr Smythe, together with his wife and child, arrived in Carterton last evening from Australia. Dr Smythe is comencmg in practice here. I understand that the doctor has taken Northland House in Tyne Strett. A meeting of the local Friendly Societies' Council has been convened for Tuesday evening for the transaction of general and special business. The local Brass Band favoured th* public to a pleasant selection ot music on *he Recreation Ground this afternoon, the attendance being good and the weather favourable. Notwithstanding the difficulties that constantly face the Band in the way of losing members, the Band is making excellent progress under Bandmaster R. Crawley.
