From Our Resident Reporter. Thursday. The towa was "alive" this afternoon, with kharki-clad volunteers, the occasion being the annual inspection parade uf the Wairaraua Companies of the Fifth Ruahire Battalion at Belvedere. Inspector-General Colonel Davis carried out the inspecj tion. Some years ago the Seventh Day Adventists held a very successful mission in Carterton, under Mr Crowthers. Now another mission is to be field here, the camp for the purpose having been pitched at the southern end of the town. In the window of a lecal tobacconist is to be seen the massive challmge cup presented to the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society by the local dairy companies, for the milking competition. Mr Harry Feast, of Ahiakouka, is the first to have his name inscribed on it. Last evening a very pleasant social WES held at Dalefield in aid of the hall funds. In a cricket match with Dalefield on Saturday, the local club will be represented by the. following:—Hart, ' Feast, Maunstll, Silver?, Elliott, Williams (2), Thompson, Smart, and Hutchison. | The Borough Council held a special meeting last eveni; g, when Councillor Hart presided in the absence of the Mayor «(Mr W, Moore). The special order re Rhodes Street drainj age loan was confirmed. It was de- ; cided to recognise no liability in the claim ofArthur Yates for £4O alleged damage to a section of land through altering the road level, and backing the water on to his property. A claim of £ 1 90 10s for extra work in connection with the street improvement contract, and £36 penalty alleged to have been wrongfully imposed, was received from the solicitors for A. W. Jones, the contractor. The Engineer at the time (Mr Kissell) wrote that with the exception of crushed metal left on the site, valued at £2l 12s'6d, and £4 10s for tarring and sanding round telegraph pole,?, the Council should recognise no liability. As the Council had already paid for the crushed metal, consideration of the letter was held over until next meeting. F. W. Burling was the successful tenderer at Is Id per cubic yard for metalling the southern end of Brooklyn Road. H. and H.
