PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Thursday. A meeting was held in the Scarborough Schoolhouse, last evening, to consider the question of holding a social in aid of the Scarborough footpath funds. Mr Godfrey Taylor occupied the chair. It was decided that Ml present should be a social committee, and Mr J. Brechin was elected secretary. It was also decided to ask the Jadies of the district to iovin a ladies committee, and meet t!i2 general committee in the Schoolhouse on Monday evaning next, to make final arrangements for a social on Thursday evening. As the pbjeet is a thoroughly*' commendable one from every point of view, it is to be hoped that the tickets will sell' freely, as the footpath when compkted will be of the utmost usd. The Scarborough School Committee met last evening, when ordinary run Line business was transacted. The school's finances were shown to be in a good sound footing. Last evening the Pahiatua Brass Band rendered selections in the main square, the items bem. m :■.::: a pie-c:\i-id by a large number of residents present. - The people of Pongaroa intend to tender Mr R. B. Rcss, M.P.. a complimentary social at an early date. I was informed that all arragements were made a month ago, but were postponed at Mr Ross' request to enable the Prime Minister to be present. ' : • Although little interest was taken in the Licensing Election in this town there was good polling at some of the booths in the back country. A cricket match between Aldtio snd Pahiatua will probably be played on the local ground at Easter. Mr J. A. Walsh has just returned from a trip to the back blocks. Roads that have never been travelled over before by motor cars was'safely negotiated by Mr Walsh and Mr Donald in one of Messrs Donald and Eastwood's cars. The experience was unique, and on some of the steep hiily roads newly metalled with burnt papa, the car's stability was severely tested. * The Pahiatua Mounted Rifles have decided to disband.

MANGATAINOKA NOTES. The Library Hall was crowded last evening, when th-j residents of Mangatainoka tendered a farewell social to the Rev. A. W. H. Campton prior to for Wellington. An excellent musical and vocal programme greatly added to the enjoyment cf those present. On behalf of the residents Mr Crawford, in an appropriate speech, presented the guest with a case of pipes, and tobacco pouch', and later in the evening Mr R. Williams, on behalf of the captain of the Mangatainoka Cricket Club, who was unable to be present, asked the Rev. Compton to accept a present of a set of cavalry brushes from the Mangatainoka Cricket Club, of which be was an active member. During the evening songs were rendered by the Misses Tulloch, Burgess, Carter, Mrs Rombach and Messrs Compton and Ashby. Piano solos by Miss Grace and Miss Woodham, and a quartette by Mrs, Mr and Miss Burgess, and Rev. Compton.

. Although the Kohunui cricketers suffered defeat at the hands of Mangatainoka' on Saturday last, they are going to try and turn the tables on Saturday next, on the local ground. The following will represent Mangatainoka:—H. Pearcey, . Williams, Bacon, Chatwin, Brocketfc, Hawke, Grace, May, Crawford, Coston, Ashby; emergencies, McLeary, Smea--ton. The will start at 1.30 if possible. The Rev. Compton will preach in St. Mark's Church for the last time before leaving lor Wellington, on Sunday evening next. Jn the morn--Jng a confirmation service will be held by the Bishop, who will hold a similar service in St. Peter's Church, Pahiatua, in the evening. A meeting of friends from Woodvills, Pahiatua, Makairp and Kumexoa, met in the 1 library Hall on Saturday evening, and decided to tender '"a complimentary social and presentation to Mr R. B. Ross, M.P., about the beginning of May. Mr J. D. Wilson was appointed secretary.
