WAIRARAPA AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB.
FIRST CARNIVAL. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Officials.—Referee, Dr. R. V. Hosking; Judges, Messrs J. Georgeson, A. C. Major, W. Pryor, E. Richards; Starter, Mr E. R. B. Daniel; Check Starter, Dr. R. V. Hosking; Costume and Number Stewards, Messrs M. Olds and F. B. Kosson; Timekeepers, Messrs L. Nicol and E. R. B. Daniel; Prtss Steward, Mr R. Brown; Hon. Secretary, Mr J. A. McEwen. The Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Club held its first carnival on the Masterton Park Lake yesterday, the weather being ideal. The meeting was a successful one from all points except * financial one, as, though there was an attendance of several hundreds of people the gate takings realised only about £5. This fact is not complimentary to the public of Masterton, as the Club will be put to a fair amount of expense in connection with the affair, and they worked very hard to make the carnival a success, practically the whole work devolving on a dozen persons. However, it is hoped that through the generosity ot the prize donors, and the willing assistance of lady friends of the Club the carnival will prove to have been financially successful . enough to er.able < the Club to meet the expenses out of the takings. The sport was splendid, the racing in every instance being of a most satisfactory chiracter, close finishes showing that the handicapping had been capably carried out. The races were got off well to time, and the officials in charge of this department deserve special mention for their good work. The performances of the winners in the long distance events were most creditable, fast times b~eing registered, while the boy's races showed how healthily the young idea is developing along swimming lines. The boys also dived exceedingly well. Comic events were well patronised, and caused much amusament. The appointments at the gathering were in all respects irreproachable, the secretary (Mr J. A. McEwen) and committee —■ especially Mr Daniell and Dr. K. V. Hosking—carrying out onerous duties methodically and uncomplainingly. The Club is fortunate-in having such gentlemen at the head of affairs, as it is almost entirely due to their energy and enthusiasm that the Club is able to maintain any interest in swimming, in spite of many local advantages now offering to swimmers. It was a pleasant thing to observe that there was a big attendance of ladies, including the '.'ommittee and President (Mrs J. W. Blackman) of the Ladies' Swimming Club. The fair patrons exhibited keen interest in the events, and thus showed themselves to be appreciative of the value of the art. An afternoon tea kiosk was in charge of Mrs J. A. McEwen, assisted by Mesdames Blackman and Waters, and Misses C. McEwen, and May Scott. To these ladies the Club is very deeply indebted for their valuable asiistance, as the kiosk proved a great success. v The s artirg of the -events was very efficient", and the judging never questioned. The Club wish to thank _,- all who aseiste 1 in any way at the carnival, and specially those who laboured strenuously about the lake itself to assist the officials in their worlc. The Club aho wish to thank the Masterton Municipal Band for its attendance, the music be in"' greatly appreciated. The Park staff deserve a mead of prais-j, alsi, for willing assistance rendered to the Club in various ways. Following are details, of the events: — 50 YARDS HANDICAP (Opan). First Heat.- T.
