CARTERTON NEWS.
From Our Resident Reporter. Wednesday. Mr David Thomas, who has been ill for the past few days, died at his residence, North High Street, late this afternoon. The deceased was 80 years of age, and had resided in the district for a good length of time. He leaves an aged widow to mourn his loss. The deceased was a member of the Oddfellows' Lodge, Wellington. This morning Mr Jas. Mackenzie, Commissioner of Lands, Mr A. Reese, of the Land Board, and Mr Wright, clerk, inspected Messrs Bunny and Anderson's property at the north of Carriugton Estate, which is under offer to the Government for closer settlement. Yesterday the local Salvation Army officers had an unpleasant experience when driving to Featherston. They were nearing the Waiohine Bridge, when the horse shied, and backed the vehicle over the embankment of the approach. The occupants were thrown out, but fortunately were not hurt. The trap was considerably damaged. The (lun Club met last evening, Mr B. Scannell presiding. The statement cf finances showed a credit balance of £4 13s Id, including £1 13s balance from the last ".shoot." ft was resolved "that the club could not see its way to share in the responsibility of running the clay bird championship with the Greytown Club in June, but would assist with competitors." The next "shoot" was fixed for Saturday, March 27th. It is probable that Messrs S. Jensen (Waihakeke), and J. G. Oates (Parkvale), will compete in the Gun Club championship meeting at Amberley at Easter.
