A TERRIBLE FIRE.
CONFLAGRATION ON FLOWER BOATS. THOUSAND LIVES LOST. A WILD PANIC. DETAILS BY MAIL. Received March 10, 9.35 a.m. SYDNEY, March 10. A mail, via Port Darwin, brings details of the recent terrible confl-g----ration on the flower boats on the Pearl Ri«er, near Canton. Nearly all the boats were consumed, causing the loss of a thousand lives. The majority were drowned. The fire occurred on a Saturday night, when many parties were being given by Mandarins. The wildest panic prevailed. Hundreds of people seemed to be jumping into tru water to save themselves from the fira, and many were saved, but over 200 charred corpses were discovered up to the Sunday afternoon. It is apparent that the boats were heavily laden with humanity. It is said that many Mandarins wera among the burned, and that the victims '-jlsj included ten bankers and a number of prominent business men. The fire, it is supposed, originated through the falling of a kerosene lamp.
