THE COMMONWEALTH.
THE PREMIER'S CONFERENCE. MR FISHER'S VIEWS. Received March 10, 9.50 a.m. HOBART, March 10. The Hon. Mr Fisher (Federal Prime Minister) informed the Premier's Conference that the Federal Government had r.o intention to take full ad...;ntageof the Braddon clause. He wished the conference and the country to get out oMneir minds that hia Govern nent at the end of 1910 intended to seize the whole of the Customs ana excise revenue. He desired in a genera! way to s?e the financial relationship of the Common ■ wealth and the States separated on some satisfactory basi*. but he was not irrevocably committed to a scheme which compels all the work required by the Commonwealth to be constructed out of revenue. At the same time, he viewed with political horror the idea of a seventh borrower in Austra'ia.
Mr Fisher added that ii. would take something to move him to launch out on a borrowing policy until some arrangement had been come to between the Commonwealth and the States.
