CARTERTON NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter.) Tuesday. The Licensing Committee met here to-day, when Messrs W. P. James (Chairman), Jas. Brown, A. 0. Considine, W. Udy, and G. A. Fairbrother were present. Three transfers of licenses were granted—viz., the Tauherenikau Hotel, from A. C. Nitz to Mr Traill (temporary transfer) ; Club Hotel, Martinborough, D.O.A. in the bankrupt estate of T. B. H. McGuire to C. F. Priest; Greytown Hotel, Mrs Clara Smith to Henry Collins. Only routine business was transacted at the fortrig'itly meeting of the 1.0. R. Lodge last evening, Bro. W. Tucker presiding. The printed report of the business ana discussion at the recent district meeting was received for distribution, and one member wan reported on the sick list. During Lent, the Rev. R. Young will hold a sh;;rt sax-vice for children, in St. Mark's Church before school. The service will commence at 8.40, and is over at 9 o'clock, to give the children ample time to get to school. The funeral of the late Mr George Burnett took place at the Clareville Cemetery this afternoon in the presence of a large gathering of mourners. The -service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. L. Thompson, of St. Andrew's Church Mr W. P. James, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate's Court to-day. For riding a motor-cycle, between the hours of sunset and sunrise, Francis Washlourne was fined 7s and costs 10s. James Callister proceeded against Daniell Flynn, who was charged with having used obscene language. The defendant was bound over to keep the peace. In the case of A. W. Russell v. Chas. Diamond, a claim of £9 2s for trespass and damage to property, judgment was given for ,£1 10s and costs £1 14s.

It is understood the receipts of the tour just covered bare expenses.
LANCASHIRE DEFEATED. Received March 9, 9.53 p.m. LONDON, March 9. The Australian League team scored a goal and 4 cries against Lancashire's 3 tries. The ground was heavy. In the first half Courtney secured two tries and Abercrombie a goal. In the second half Anlezark and Holloway obtained trie?. Lancashire twice held the lead. It was an exciting match.
