At the social in the Hall, last evening, given by Mr and Mrs Barrell. songs were nicely rendered by Miss May and Mr Brind, ar.d the music for the dancing, which was highly commented upon, supplied by Messrs E. Sharp (violin) and T. Dray and J. Brind (piano). Mr J. Quinlan made a capable M.C. The following players vv'Jl represent Mangataincka in their match against Kohunui at the latter place or. Saturday Messrs Grace, Chatwin, Biockett, Crawford, Williams, Peareey, Bacon, Hawke, May, F.ev, Coinpton, Costor.; emergency, McLeary. The match will start at 1.30 sharp. A social that is being arranged by the settlers of Makairo ana Kohunui in aid of the "Penguin Relief Fund" •will ha held at Makairo to-morrow (Friday) evening. The late Mr Sidney W. Rentoul, who whs third engineer of the wrecked ship Penguin, was wellknown about here, and was a cousin of Mrs Butters of this district. The deceased was well spoken of by his many friends as a mi i 1 »:• rlir.g qualities. Miss Hilda Barreil, who was married yesterday to Mr W. Wotherspoon, was presented by the members of St. Mark's Church with a handsome hall clock, and a gold brooch, set with rabies and pearl?. WOODVILI.E HORTICULTURAL SHOW.
Splendid weather prevailed for the Wcodvilie Horticultural and Industrial Society's Show, which was held in the Drill Hall yesterday. The Show compared favourably with previous Shows, and splendid samples of produce were shown, Mr W. Miller, senior, taking most prizes in thi§. class. Mr Fletcher deserves special mention for his splendid exhibit of " general farm produce, almost every conceivable article being shown, including grain and root crops, fruit, jams, pickles, syrups, honey, dressed sucking pig, and poultry and general dairy produce. In cut flowers Messrs J. A. Nichollas and W. F. Doney took the bulk of the prizes, Mr Dcney'-s exhibit of an india-rubber tree also attracting a good deal of attention. In local grown fruits, good samples ■were shown by Mr Palmer, this exhibitor taking most of the first prizes. The pot plants were not quite so good as some shown in previous years. There was keen competition in fancy work, ' industries and school children's work, snme of the.latter class being exceptionally good. In bouquets, etc., the following ladies took first prize:—Hand and bridal bouquet, Mrs L. M. Smith; device in flowers, Miss E. Hartstone; dressed flower stand and basket of foliage, Mrs Grinlinton; buttonhole bouquet, Miss Stevenson; Miss Grinlinton; hand bouquet, sweet peas, Miss McCoffery; basket of flowers, Mrs L. M. Smith. The Secretary (Mr Stevenson) had all the arrangements complete, and fie was ably assisted by ths general committee. The championship points prize (silver medal) was won by Mr J. A. Nichollas, with 84 points, Mr W. F. Doney baing a clcse secor.d with 80 to his credit, and Mr Hawken third withjs6. Messrs Horton, Ltd., of the Hastings and Pahiatua nurseries, had a splendid exhibit of pot plants and cut plants, including some fine specimens of roses and dahlias, and a large and varied assortment of fruit. Two apples in this collection were worthy of special mention, being of Peasgood Nonsuch and Ripstone Pippin variety, same of the latter being ten inche3 in circumference. The display was arranged by Mr Dobbie, manager of the Pahiatua Branch, the general effect being excellent. BAND CONCERT. The Pahiatua District Band were extramely fortunate in having a fine moonlight night for their open air concert at Mr D. Crewe's grounds last evening. There was a large attendance of the public. It is some considerable time since a function of this kind waa held in Pahiatua, and the singers and the band could le heard to advantage from the illuminated stand erected. Songs weie rendered by Messrs T. Manifold (encored), Gant (encored), Burgess,
Eccleton, and C. Mills; duets by Mrs "and Miss Burgess, and a quartette by Mrs Burgsss, Miss Burgess, and Messrs Burgess and Manifold. The band, which has improved wonderfully in its playing, gave several selections in excellent style, and the trombone solo by Mr Bert Mills, with full band accompaniments, was much appreciated. At the conclusion of the programme dancing on the green was indulged in, which was much enjoyed by those present. The solo cornet, Mr Simpson, is a great help to the band, and the conductor, Mr J. Trezise, has made splendid progress with the younger pupils, and the Pahiatua Baud should, if it keeps going ahead as it is at present, be able to enter for the next second class band contest. The management of the Band wish to heartily thank Mr and Mrs Crew<D for their generosity in lending their grounds for the occasion, Mr McAlister for landing a piano, Mes?rs Moore and Kean for valuable assistance rendered on the ground, the performers, and all those who helped to make the concert such a deci .'ed success. GENERAL. Mr A. H. Dall .rflon, one of 01 r local dentists, will leave for a short holiday on Saturday, ar.cl Mr J. E. G. Clarkson, of Masterton, will take his place until his return. A tennis match between teams representing the town and the country will be played on the lojal courts on Saturday.
