Winter, late of Masterton, scored 70 in this section. There was some good playing right through, but the bass trombones were a very ordinary lot. It is to be regretted that the solos ara bringing forward so few contestants, four and five being the greatest number in the sections.
Hughes, of Nelson, stood out in the double basses, and gave a splen- | did performance. The flutelist3 were absolutely wretched, and the trombone trio was or,ly fair. Wanganui won both competitions. The weather is glorious, and everything promises well for the first selection to-night, and a large attendance is anticipated. THE TEST PIECE. A GRADE WON BY WANGANUI.
