HASTINGS BAND CONTEST.
By Telegraph—Special to the Age. HASTINGS, February 24. The playing at the Band Contest must be rated generallj as verging upon poor, except in one or two instances. The trombones were a fair lot, but the cornets, excepting the prize-takers* were wretchedly poor. Only one soprano cornet finished v the solo (Trussell, of Wanganui), and even he was not in- his usua|; : form. Caulton played very nicely- indeed. A bright spot in the evening's entertainment was the euphoniums, which were a good section. Hickman (Wanganui) won witt'- points out of 100, Williams ( Vanganui) 86,. being second. Both played splendidly. The qucikstep to-day resulted in some fairly good playing by a number of the bands. The test march
entitled "Palmerston" proved too much for some of the bands. A number of the older bands failing badly in music. On the other hand, Wanganui failed in drill; 'and only the substantial lead in music points gain d them the prize. The Newion Band put up a fine performance also, and jjstly earned second position.
