j POPULATION OF LARGti CITIES. A cablegram la3t week stated that the population of Sydney and suburbs at the end of last year was 592,100. It is interesting to note that Sydney now • occupies seventh place on the list of great cities uf the British Empire. The population of the chief cities of the Empire is as follows: London, 4,758,218; Bombay, 982,000; Calcutta, 955,920; Glasgow, 847,584; Liverpool, 746,144; Manchester, 643,148; Sydney, 592,100; Birmingham, 553,155; Madras, 542,518; Melbourne, 541,000. The population of other great cities is:— New York, 4,285,435; Paris, I 2,735,105; Chicago, 2,107/520; Berlin, 2,090,318; Vienna, 1,979,003; St. Petersburg, 1,505,200; Philadelphia, 1,500,595; Moscow, 1,372,800; Buenos Ayres, 1,102,155; Hamburg, 844,579; Rio de Janiero, 028,075; Boston, 009,702; San Francisco, 400,000.
