Closer Imperial unity is desirable, but there is an equally strong feeling against undue haste and against revolutionary alterations in.an Imperial
the satisfactory character of which is demonstrated by the tone of our grumblings. For the present the self governing colonies are quite content to leave Imperial 'affairs in the hands of the Government of the Mother Country, provided, says the Auckland "Herald," that our representative statesmen are consulted when our interests are affected, and that the Secretariate which advises British Colonial Secretaries is intimately acquainted with colonial matters. Both these claims arc being acknowledged by the Imperial authorities, and thus safe and easy steps are being taken towards that final Imperial Federation which is conceived of as the goal of the Imperial movement, and towards which everything tends which makes for an amicable and cordial understanding between every part of our peaceful Empire.
