A TAIHAPE SENSATION.

AN EXCITING TIME. By Telegraph—Press Association. TAIHAPE, February 23. A sensation occurred at Ohutu last night. It appears that two men named Garlick, a labourer, aged 25, and Chatfield, a married man, rode to Taihape yesterday, returning late in the afternoon. Evidently they quarreled. They got off their horses, Chatfield being thrown over a bank. Had he reached the river death would have been certain, but fortunately he landed on the ; verge of a cliff, and was found subsequently in "a dazed condition. His assailant probably assuming that his companion was disposed of rode off, leading the other horse. He made for Chatfield's house, where, seizing a carving knife, he threatened to "do" for the rest of the family. Fortunately a man, named Oliver, was present, and after a desperate struggle the latter secured the knife. Garlick then whipped out a "jack" knife and renewed the fray again. He was again disarmed. Then Garlick jumped into a two-hors° dray and drove to his lodgings, where he secured a loaded gun. He returned to Chatfield's house, and threatened to shoot any one who interfered with him. He tried to induce some spectators to go with him in order to show them where Chatfield was. They declined, and Garlick then asked for Mrs Chatfield. Being told she had gone, he said, "T'll go too."
