CRUELTY TO A CHILD.
By Telegraph—Press Association. WHANGAREI, February 22. At the Police Court, Arthur Edward Sell and Marguerita Sell were charged with committing an aggravated assault on a child, Allen Robert Tait, son of the female defendant, aged three years. The child was a fearful mass of bruises from head to foot. The doctor said that the child had been beaten in a most cruel and disgraceful manner, and could not have stood it inuc'n longer. In giving judgment, the Bench said that the perpetrators should be flogged till they were black and blue, but he did not want to send a young couple to gaol. He fined them £5 each, in default three months' imprisonment.
