The live stocK judging competition at the Showground yesterday was keenly contested and resulted in Mr A. Swift being placed first and Mr J. A. Welsh second.
In connection with the freezing classes of the Masterton A. and P. Association no less than 880 sheep will be consigned to the Meat Export Con.ipanylto be killed and forwarded to London for t. e purpjses of judging. The Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Club inte.id holding a carnival on the 11th of March, and last evening Dr. R. V. Hosking and the secretary of the Club (Mr J. A. McEwen; waited upon the Council to ask permission to use the Park Lake on the afternoon of the date mentioned v it j a right to take up a .oluntary collection from adults The permission was granted unanimously.

The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Fire Brigade was held last evening, Superintendent Jenkins presiding. Leave of absence for a month was granted to Hydrantman Matthews. Permission was granted to the Carterton Fire Brigade team to practice on the Oval on a date to be arranged. Fireman McEwen was elected delegate to represent the Brigade at the Fire Brigades' Conference at Auckland. A three years' certificate was granted to Fireman Holmes. Other routine business was transacted.
The Mayor (Mr P. L. Holiings) brought up the matter of the wreck of the Penguin at last night's meeting of the Borough Council. His Worship said that such a terrible disaster called for an expression of sympathy from the whole district. He moved that * resolution of sympathy be forwarded to the Union Company on behalf of the whob district. Cr Ewington thought that the Council might go further, and if subscriptions were necessary, to assist those who were rendered needy, that the Council take steps to open a list therefor. Eventually it was decided to send a resolution of sympathy to the Union Company, and to request the Company to forward a subscription list to the Council, the Town Clerk to have charge of ihe list, and to invite tne public to contribute.

At the Palmerstun North Supreme Court yesterday Herbert Bergstrom was found guilty on two separate charges of sheep-stealing, and was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment with hard labour on each, the sentences to be concurrent.
The sixth annual sports meeting of the St. Patrick's Sports Day Association will be held on Wednesday, March 17ih next. The programme includes the St. Patrick's Day Handicap of £\s, Half mile and One Mile Handicaps of £5 each. Other events include music, dancing and wrestiing, and a social and dance will be held in the evening. Entries for the Handicap events close with the secretary (Mr 0. A. Tabuteau), Masterton, on March 6th.

The Oaraaru police desire a claimant for 52 bottles of whisky and a half dozen of beer. The Maaterton Borough Council met last evening, a full Council, presided over by the Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollings) being present. The Works Comn.itte/s report of last wetk was adopted. In it permission was grantf-d to Mr J. H. Redfern to use certain premises in Qaeen street I'm- a gallery. A fortnight's holiday was granted to Mr D. Jackson, custodian of the Park, i:i addition to a bonus of £lO, in appreciation of his good work at the Park. Mr A. P. Rawsun, was givm permission to put a pipe li'.ie under Donald street subject to conditions A substituted lease was granted to Mr E. W. Peters for a portion of the waterworks r serve. It was resolved to inform the Fire Board that the Council would not supply a horse for fire purposes after May Ist next. It was resolved after division to refer the matter of street lighting charges on the Borough, to the Borough Engineer and the Gas Manager with a view of a settlement being arrived at. The Town Clerk reported that he and the Gas Manager differed on a point in the matter and the question was referred to the Works Committee. It was also resolved to extend the water main 20£ chains along High street.

The exhibition of new season's millinery, made in the Exchange Buildings, Masterton, by Messrs C. Adams and Co., of Wellington, attracted a deal of attention yesterday. Some very smart models were shown and good sales recorded.
