"Y(From*Our2-Reaident*Repffi-ter). ' Monday. ©AIRY NOftlJS.

The B&llance Co-dperative Dairy Company paid out to-'day the sum of .£6,800 for January's milk supply. This is the largest fayment made for the month of Januaryjsince the Company started. The total of 3,915,295 pounds of milk was supplied during *ihe month, and! tne average test was 3.8. The butter manufactured was all -classed first grade, some reaching as ifoigh as 9U points. The sum of £750 will be paid out the 20th inst. by the Makuri Pongaroa Dairy Factory for the supply of milk feir January.

I visited'the Hawke's Bay Dairy Co.'s butter factory at Mangatainoka this morning. Everything at the factory was in first-wass order. Mr Luke, the popular manager of the factory, stated that the milk supply had kept up remarkably well this season owing no doubt to the splendid growing season experienced. At present they were manufacturing 55 boxes of butter daily and in the flush of the season d 6 bo.-ces as the number. The average test at the present time is 3.9, and cream is supplied to the factory from creameries, at Woodville (3), Kumeroa, Makairo. Kaitawa and Jockey'town. The output for the season was expected to reach about 300 tons. The butter is sent Home, and so iar good market prices have been ■obtained. The factory is fitted up with all the latest machinery, one of the latest improvements being a 40 b.h.p. suction gas engine. This ■engine makes its own gas out of coke, and works«n a very economical principle, the cost of running it for thirteen hours being about 3s 6d. Two large Alpha de Laval separators are in use, and an eight ton Hercules freezer. During the winter the box churns are to be replaced by two combined churns. GENERAL. Quite a gloom was cast o"er the town when the sad news of the wreck ofthe Penguin came through Saturday morning. When it became known that Mr and Mrs Hale were passencers on the boat, many anxious inquiries were made about them. Both Mr and Mrs Hale were wellknown in this town, and were exceedingly popu?jf.r. M? Hale was to have visited PuhiatJa to-morrow {Tuesday). • 'lhe annual school picnic and social in connection with the Kumeroa school was held on Friday last. At the "Mart* 5 to-morrow, Messrs Mitchell and 'Griffith will offer a large consignment of fruit, including a. small line of splendid raspberries from Hastings in 121b buckets. The tender of Mr A. East for the fruit and lollie stall has been accepted by the Woodville Show Committee for their annual show meeting on .February 24th. Many residents of this district intend visiting the Masterton Show on Wednesday next Day). The morning trains from Pahiatua will 3-un at the usual time, viz.., 6.50 a.m. and 10.20 a.m. The secretary of the Scarborough :School Committee wishes to make a correction in connection with the scholarship obtained by Miss Dora Taylor. The scholarship was an Education Board and Junior National Scholarship, and not a high school scholarship, as previously mentioned. Tbe obtaining.of this scholarship by Miss Taylor reflects the greatest credit on both master ar.d pupil. A special meeting of the Borough Council will be held to-night when <Cr Wilson will move thai the number of councillors be reduced from ;uine to six.

I understand that Mr L Osburne Lilly has been asked and has consented to contest the MayoraJ .seat at -the election to be heJd shortly. The ■Post Office question has aroused the interest Df the ratepayers considerably. and an interesting -election is looked forward to, especially if it to reduce the number of councillors. During the last two years no interest whatever has been taken in the elections. The following entries have been received for the colt'B trophy, a pair of bowls presented by the local Bowling Club Messrs J. Mills,

Ashcroft, H. Pearcey, Lu Feist, U. Moore, Early, Godsio, Clifton. I understand that a second prize will be donated by Mr J. D. C. Crewe. The best four of the colts are anxious to try conclusions with the feather-holders.

The action of the Mayoress (Mrs D. Crewe) in inviting the hospital patients and staff and some of the aged residents of the Borough, as guests to her house on the occasion of the visit of the "Kilties ' Band, has been highly appreciated by those concerned.

A splendid show of high-Jass sweets and confectionery, artistically arranged, may be seen in Mr East's new window.

The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua District High School Committee was held to-night. It was decided to call tenders for cleaning the school for the next twelve months, the tenders to dose in three weeks' time. The committee endorsed the action of the Chairman and Secretary in paying out accounts amounting to £l7 2s. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Education Board in connection with metalling the school ground. The school which has been erected on the new site was opened to-day.. A boy named Clifton, son of Mr Thos. Clifton, fell on some Limber at the school ground to-day., with the result that his face was very badly cut about, necessitating three stitches being put in by the doctor.
