A start was made to-day the taking of tht levels for the PahiatuaScarborough footpath. At the meeting of the cot»gregati<?Jn of St Paul's Church, Jsst evening, it was decided, after consider.ible discussion, to make the charge a self-sustaining one. One member promised to donate £l2O fdr the first year if ifeund necessary. Hitherto the Church has been in receipt of an annual grant from the Home Mission Fund. About fifteen -of the local bowlers 'will journey ; to Masterton to-morrow (Wednesday) morning to play a return match with the Masterton bowl

CIS. No business was done at the local Courthouse this morning, all the civil cases having been settled our, of Court. Mr L. Gardner had the misfortune to loose the top of his middle finger, and had two other fingers badly cut at Gardner and Yeoman's siuvmii', Pongaroa, recently. Mr Ruskill, of Rakanui, intends having a large wool shed erected on Ms property, and the contractor, Mr , A. J. Birt, left for Rakanui this

.morning to commence the work. Great preparations are being made Hot :the coming of the "Kilties" Band on Thursday next. The local bandsmen are going to turn out in full force and play the "Kilties" to Mr Crewe's grounds, where seating aaccomriuodation is being already arranged for the comfort of the general public. Residents from all ths surrounding country districts nave signified their intention to be present, and given a fine day a very large attendance is expecteJ. At the meeting of the Baliance School Committee last evening, it was decided to hold the annual picnic and distribution of prizes on Friday, February 26th. A sawmilter of forty .years experience, states that fee never ,knew the sawmilling industry in .such s. depressed state as it is at the present time. This, he states, is in a great measure due to i-estriictiions placed on the industry,, wages, hours of labour,,and allowing- outside competition, without restrictions regarding wages, colour, hours of <vor.k, etc., with the single exception of a small import duty.

THE KILTIES. (To the Editor). Sir,— My Scottish blood boiled -when I read Mr A. S. Evans' letter in your issue of last Friday anentthe half-holiday in connection with the Kiltie's visit to Pahiatua. Methought at least the shopkeepers ■would have gloried in hearing good music, and what music in the world can compare with old Scotia's national musk--the bagpipes? It is the custom elsewhere to receive such a class of entertainment with open arms, and do everything to enable them to take back home pleasant recollections, as well as the bawbees, o* their visits to the small towns of the Dominion. It is no too late for the business men of Pahiatua to show £hsir loyalty to the muses and proclaim Thursday a half-holiday instead of Wednesday. A few shillings more or Jess in their week's takings is a minor consideration compared with the enjoyment to be got out of listening to the skirl of the pipes, trusting that Mr Evans will see the error of his ways and try and convine, the Holiday Committee to close when the Kilties are here.—l am, etc.., A.
