A very pleasant social, given by Mr and Mrs E. C. Cox, in honour of their son Clarence attaining the age of 21, was held in St. Peter's Schoolroom la3t evening. Dancing, singing and cird playing was indulged in, and an Biioyable evening spent. After an appetising supper had bsen partaken of, the Mayor (Mr D. Crewe) made a neat spesch in which he referred to the esteem in which Mr and Mrs Cox and family were held in this town, and wished Mr Cl.irence Cox many
happy returns of the day. IVr W. Norrel endorsed Mr Crewe s remarks. ,„.Mr Cox briefly responded. Songs "*were renderad during the evening by Miss Little and Messrs Godso, W. Boagey and C. Cox, and musical Items by Mi?s Cox, Mrs Eastwood,
and Messrs C. Mills and Haigh. To-morrtfw (Friday) will be a gala **day for Hamua and Hukar.ui, as both these places will be the scene of gatherings of great interest. At 2 . p.m. the suspension bridge over the ' Makakahi River, known as "Burke's bridge," will be opanad by the Hon. A. VV. Hogg and Mr R. B. Ross, M.P., Mis Ross bang in rusted with the duty of cutting the ribbon. The bridge, which is a very strong structure, will'carry a load up to twenty tons in weight, and was built and designed by Mr Joseph Dawson, the well-known bridge builder. Mr T. Hodgins, Chairman of the Pahiatu& County Council, the Councillors, and the County Engineer (Mr Milne) "will be and it is anticipated that a large number of settlers will be present from the neighbouring

ratepayers were present. The following resolution was proposed by Mr W. W. McArdle, junr., "That, in the opinion of this meet ing, it is not desirable to part with any of the squares for a Post Office, or any other building." The motion
was seconded by Mr D. "1. Davidson. Mr E. Hare moved an amendment that this question be settled by a vote pf the ratepayers. This was seconded by Mr G. H. Smith. * After considerable discussion, in which Messrs J. D." Wilson," W. H. Hawkins, W. Tosswill, A. Sedcol?, and others took part, the»amendment was carried on a show cf hands, there being only one cissentient. Mr P. Debreceny, of the Club -Hotel, has secured the publican's booth at the Woodville race meeting on the 17th and 18th of this month. The fortnightly meeting of Lodge Mangatainoka, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was held last evening, Bro. Boyens, N.G., presiding. Two delegates were appointed to wait, in company with delegates from other Friendly Societies, on Dr Dawson, re the British Medical Association model agreement. One delegate was appointed to represent the Lodge at the annual district meeting to be held at Masterton on Monday, February 15th, and one candidate was initiated. A very successful social was Held in the Kaitawa Hall last evening in aii of the Hall funds. Visitors were present from Pahiatua and surrounding districts.
