Carlyle, Waimaria and Montague 9.0. TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland"). A meeting of members of the Lower Valley Jockey Club is to be held shortly to consider a notice of motion relative to holding a one-day meeting on Boxing Day instead cf adhering to a two day's fixture. It is probable that should the Club decide to continue two days' racing a change of dates will be considered. Dolly, by The Premier, and dam of Lethargy, died at Greytown last week. The advisability of appointing s l ;'- dendiary stewards ia commandif g the attention of several North Island clubs, and it is now considered certain that the question will be gone into in earnest by the Racing Conference in July next. Hithtrto tl at body has taken very little notice of proposals in the direction of the appointment of stipendiary or advisory stewards, but certain happenings recently have tended to change the minds of at least some of the leading I delegates to the Conference. Humpty Dumpty, winner of the ' Trial Scurry at Pabiatua, is a five-year-old full sister to that good performer, Merriwai. The mare shows promise of racing well duiing the remainder of the season. It has been thought probabla that Mr E. J. Wju's Merriwee, whj.ie stock have been racing so successfully during the season, would be tent hick to Australia, and his services thus be lost to this Dominion. I.understand, however, that Mr Watt has decidpd to keep the Bill of Portland horse afe Hawke's Bay. Quite a number oi breeders will be glad to find that he has arrived at this decision. After running unsuccessful throughout this season Mr R. Knox's uucretius accounted for the Newmarket Handicap at Pahialua. Now that she has got to the front the Merrie England mar 3 may continue to run prominently during the season. Mr A. J. Stont-Wigg'siSnow Star, who fell and broke his back at Pahiatua, gave promise of being a distinct success over country. A fine jumper, gifted with pace, he may have proved very useful at winter steeplechase meetings.. The disqualification of S. Reid, by the Wellington Racing Club, is still claiming the attention of at least a few sporting writers.. Naturally there are differences of opinion on the subject, and while the controversy is being prolonged a certain amount of interest is suae to be main-* tained by the racing public. This • being so, it follows that the result of meeting between Waikaraka and Consolation, who finished first and second, respectively, in the race through which the trouble arose, will be very interesting. The horses mentioned are nominated for the Wanganui meeting, and all being well, will fight their battle over again. The totalisator permit hitherto given to the Masterton Trotting Club, which disbanded recently, is to be given to the newly formed Wanganui Trotting Club. TRIUMPH 1909 MODEL MOTOE CYCLES tfOW AERIVED. The main improvement in the 1909 Triumph is in the engine, in which a departure from the usual practice has been adopted in respect to the piston.. The new Triumph piston has two rings, one at the top and one at the bottom,, instead of the general < practice of two or three at the top. This absolutely ensures even wear of the cylinder walls, the whole length of the piston-travel, instead of all the wear being concentrated at the top, with consequent difficulty of obtaining proper lubrication, resulting in loss of power, knocking, etc. This system has undergone thorough practical testing on the roads, and we find the compression is retained much longer, still more power is obtained, and efficient lubrication is ensured. A sample 1909 Triumph can be seen at Mr R. Pook's cycle depot, Masterton s and a trial spin arranged. Mr E. Hyslop, distributing agent for Triumph motor cycles for Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay. Box 165, Hastings.*
