CRICKET.
Received January 29, 11.10 p.m. LONDON, January 29.'" English cricketers greatly regret Clem Hill's absence from the Australian team.
A hearty laugh was raised on the cricket field, says the " Wairoa Bell," during the course of the Manga-whare-Waipu match, at Mangawhare, on Saturday week. "Someone is losing a hat" -as the warning given by one of the players, and all eyes were soon turned in the direction indicated. The long-field had left his hat lying on the grass, and a cow coming along had taken a fancy to it and was chewing it. Longfield made a rush to his hat, but when he reached the cow he paused and gazed, while the cow stood quietly chewing hard at the white hat which hung half-way in and halfway out of her mouth It was a picture for an artist, and then the crowd roared. Long-field finally decided not to deprive the cow of her feast and resuming his place in the field play went on. The cow also went on with her game, and it Was nearly a quarter of an hour before the laht of the hat disappeared from sight. This was a real '" hat trick, and one not often seen on a cricket field.
