(From Our Own Correspondent). Friday. The Department have expended the grant on the Bowen road completing' about 63 chains oi metalling. There is a further 80 chains needed on this road to complete the metalling* from Eketahuna to Hastwells. Thia route will save about three miles in the distance between Eketahuna and, Hastwells, and Mangamahoe. There is a grant of £IOO for Smith's Line, which is a shorter route stilt from Eketahuna to the abuve-men-* tioned places. This the County Council contend would be wasted on Smith's Line on which there is a long piece unformed, ard they are asking for tne money to be divrtpd to the Bowen road. The Chamber a£ Commerce, which is anxious lo see Smith's Line opened, oppose the proposal. There are also other points of. difference between the two bodies regarding Smith's Line. The question of communication with these districts is important to town. The Eketahuna Mounted Rifles A. class competed on Thursday last for Lieut, Prendeville's trophy. There were eleven competitors, Corp. a'aahleigh being the winner. The following are the leading scoresj -^ 600 yds. 700vds. Hdp. Tl. Corp. Rashleigh3l 30 scr—6t Troopar E. Olsen 27 24 10—bl Sergt.
