! HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following ' cable from the High Commissoner, dated London, January 23rd:The mutton market is quiet. Stock of New Zealand mutton is moderate, and there ia little demand. The following are the current quotations:— Canterbury 3gd, North Island 3Jd, River Plate 3d, Australian 2|d per lb. The lamb market is weak. Stocks of Australian lamb on hand are heavy, and are widely distributed amongst agents who are pushing sales. Supplies from River Plate are increasing. The following are the current quotations:— This season's, other than Canterbury, s§d; last season's, Canterbury sd, other than Canterbury, sfd; last season's, Canterbury sd, other than CanterjU.y 4f-d. There is a batter demand for beef, bat no change in prices. The butter market is steady, with a fair business doing, and there is a better demand. Choicest New Zealand brands are quoted at 112s per cwt., Australian 108s, Danish 115s, Siberian 103s, Argentine 108s per cwt. The cheese market is firm, with a hardening tendency. White makes are quoted at 60s, and coloured, which is in small supply, at 61s per cwt. ; The following are the current quotations for hemp:—Good fair grade or. spot £25, fair grade on spot £23 ss, j fair current Manila on spot £24, January to March shipments, good fair grade, £24 10s, fair grade £22 10s, fair current Manila £23 ss. The kauri gum market is firm, with more enquiry. Current quotations are:— Ordinary to fair threequarter scraned 1655, fair half scraped 100s, brown fair half to . three-quarter scraped 90s, brown pickings common to good 555, bush fair to good pale and amber scraped 1455. Stock held in London amounts to 558 tons. The wool mark2t remains firm. Prices have slightly advanced for all grades of merino. : The hop market is dull and un--1 settled, with a downward tendency, and large supplies are coming forward. Best English hops are quoted at 70s, and American at 565.
