(From Our Resident Reporter). Saturday. At the usual meeting of the Druids' held on Friday evening, Bro. Billman, of Totara Lodge, Carterton, was the installing officer. The Pahiatua Court, which was opened eight years ago, has made rapid strides in this district. The management committee of the PresDyterian Sunday School picnic desire to thank Mr Robinson for the Ti3e of the grounds for the picnic, Mr A. East for the use of a marquee and crockery, the local livery stable proprietors for free drags, and the ladies for an abundant supply of refreshments. A well-attended social was held in the Hamua Hall last evening. The local branch of Dalgety and Co., of which Mr K. McLennan is manager, have sold over 3,000 sheep ■within the last week by private sale, several lots having gone to Wairarapa farmers. A settler from Ballanoe states that several ragwort plants may be seen in various parts of Ballance. The Pahiatua racecourse is in splendid order, and the committee are en.husiastically working to ensure the comfort of patrons at the meeting on Wednesday and Thursday iiext. The acceptances are good, and given a fine day a record meeting should result. Mr Debreceny has just received word that his hurdlle horse Don Carlos succeeded in annexing one of the stakes at Foxton to-day. A rink from the local bowlers will travel to Dannevirke on Wednesday next to take part in the competition for the "Dixon" Cup. An exciting game of bowls between the Challengers (Messrs Petherick, Walsh, J. Huehes, Mcßratney, and the Feather-holders (Messrs Lee/ Ransom, Hewat, Hawkins, skip) was played to-day, and was eventually won by the holders by US —14. The ■game was in doubt till the last head. The following have bean selected 11 represent Pahiatua in the Dixon competition at Dannevirke:—Messrs Wakeman, Norton, Hughes, Hawkins. Mr C. Bluett, who has returned from a trip to Auckland, states that an enormous number of persons are travelling over the Main Trunk Line. The country all through is looking fine. The successful tenderer for the four bridges in the Ballance district was Mr J. J. Giimour, of Dannevirke, the price being £1,117 12s. The highest tender was £1,382. Captain McDonald, of the Wellington district, was in Pahiatua to-day on questions connected with volunteering. Matters were discussed regarding the range, and Captain Wills and Lieut. Sturton cycled to the range in company with the captain. Captain McDonald regretted that more interest was not taken in defence work in Pahiatua, and hoped to see the Mounted Rifles and Infantry combined. Captain McDonald, who is a member of the Education Board, visited the old school site, a part of the school still remaining, and was much surprised to see school requisites 83attered about in various directions. Afterwards, in the company Mr J. W. Sturton, he proceeded to the new school site. The situation of the site is an excellent ond, -and the Captain informed a Wairarapa Age representative, who was present, that he considered the site would be a beauty spot when planted with trees. He also had a thorough look over the timber in the old school, which is partly removed,, and found the timber to be very sound and of the best heart of totara, and likely to last quite as long as the timber in the new school. Messrs Mitchell, Griffith and Co., Ltd., report their weekly sale as follows:—Pigs: Weaners, 9s 6d to 13s 6d; slips, 17s 6d; stores, 22s 6d. Horses, £7 10a to £9 15s;. Poultry: Hens, Is to Is 4d. Fruit: Peaches, 4s, 4s6d, 6s; pears, 3s 6d; plums, 3s to 5s 3d; rhubarb, 6d. Produce: Potatoes, 6s to 8s 6d cwt; onions, ljd per lb; eggs, Is Id per dozen; tea 61b, tin 6s 6d.
