TENNIS.
WAIRAKAPA TOURNAMENT. j The fourteenth annual Wairarapa | Tennis Tournament opened on the Mastertpn ' Lawn Tennis Club's Court 3 yesterJay, favoured Dy j splendid weather. The entries from [ players in all parts of the district | constituted a record, and good pro- i gress was made during the day, over | 80 matches being completed by the j time that the failing light compelled j a stop to the progress of t f urther play. | Players from all round this part of ! the Dominion wera present in large , numbers, conspicuous amongst whom i were Messrs A. F. Wilding (the | the hero of the Davis Cup), F. M. B. j Fisher and C. C. Cox. Thanks to the excellent arrangements made by the Management Committee all matters in connection with the Tournament wen" off smoothly, and in this respect great credit is due to the Club's groundsman, Mr F. Treader, who ably assisted by Mr Simon O'Rogan, had the grounds in excellent order. In fact it is only fair to mention in this connection that Mr A. F. Wilding stated to members of the Management Committee, that in his opinion the courts were quite equal to the best that he had played on at Home and abroad. Play will bs re-commenced this morning at 9 o'clock sharp, and as there are still a great number of games to be played competitors are requested to be in attendance on the courts sharp to time. It.is anticipated that the finals for the championship events will commence this afternoon about 2.30 o'clock, and run on consecutively till about 5.30 o'clock. Quite a number of these games will be worth witnessing, and as it is expected that the players taking part in the finals will consist of Maasrs A. b. Wilding, F.' M. B. Fisher, C. C. Cox and C. Broad, the general public can rely on seeing tennis of a higher order than that usually seen at an up-country tournament. The energotic secretary (Mr A. R. Sclandera), assisted by Mr N. D. Bunting, is leaving no stone unturned to make the tournament a success. The following are the results— MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES, First Round.— F. M. B. Fisher beat J. A. B. Howe, 6—2, 6-2; C. E.
