AQUATIC CARNIVAL.

A GREAT SUCCESS. SOME GOOD SWIMMING PERFORMANCES. MANY WELLINGTON SWIMMERS PRESENT. The second annual aquatic carnival, held on the Park Lake yesterday, under the auspices of the Borough Council Park Committee, with public assistance, was a great success. The weather was gloriously tine, and over two thousand people passed through the gates. The Lake had been very prettily decorated with hundreds of flags, and in the way of appointments no stone had been left unturned to insure that the course of events would progress smoothly. The programme started at an early hour, the first competition being timed to start at 10 o'clock, and even at that time there was a large crowd assembled around the Lake sides. The officials for the swimming events were us follow:—-Referee, Mr T. Shields. (Wellington); Committee W.A'S.C, Dr R. V. Hoiking, Messrs W. Uren, E. Danic-l, W. Darvill, b'. 13. Rjjsnu, J. A. K. Johnston. There was a big attendance of Wellington swimmers, about twenty arriving by the mid-day train. They were received by a committee of swimmers, hospitably treated during their stay, and expressed themselves as having enjoyed their outing very much. They were given a hearty seid-off at the station. The recent improvements to the Lake were found to be most beneficial for purposes of the cari.ival. The events were able to be seen to better advantage, and the comfort of t'riz public was considerably imreased. The swimming was of a very high standard, and the presence of R. Healy, brothsr of the well-known swimmer now in Australia put'inn up goccl performances, g.;vu the affair a distinctive tone. Healy was far in advance of the rest of the competitor;', and he won the 220 yds and 440ydu handicaps with the greatest ease from stiff handicaps. He was roundly applauded for his effort", and the Hon. A. W. Ho.zg, who was present, called for three cheers for Healy after his success in the Wairarapa Championship event, the response being vigorous. Mrs NobleCampbell presented Healy with the trophy (which was given by her husband), three cheers being accorc"ei to the denor. The Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Club members compared very well with the visiting swinrner?, and in the Relay Race a magnificent contest was seen, victory going to the Wellington men by the barest of margins. The officials worked exceedingly hard during the day, and everything passed off with commendable smoothness. The energetic secretary. (Mr A. K. Johnston) was admirably fitted for his responsible post, and to him must be accredited a large measure of the success of the Carnival. The Committee of the Wairarapa Swimming Club, and Messrs Shields and Smith (Wellington centr.?) lent invaluable assistance in the getting off of the swimming events. Mr F. J. Hunn supervised arrangements, and with the assistance of his large panel of stewards, kept everything well up to time. Mr .shields caused considerable amusement with his sea-serpent, the appearance and antics of which were very diverting. Mr Shields also gave an exhibition of fancy swimming. A torchlight nrocession left the Borough Chambers at 8 o'clock, headed by the Masterton South Grass Band, and in which were included the Fire Police, Fire Brigade, and Ambulance Asso:iatbn. The latter provided a splendidly got up tableaux on a lorry, the subject being a district nurse at work in a pcor household, where several Ktt'e childr-'r/were running about. The idea was w.'ll carried out, and without this pretty scene the procession would ha«e been much less attractive In the Park it-elf the Lake shores were prettily festooned with Chinese lanterns, incandescent gas lamps of high power were alight on the southern bank, while a fireworks display on a very respectable scale was given from the diving stand, The South Band played again, gra-nopnones discoursed music across the wat<;r, and illuminated boats dotted the Lake in all directions. The whole proceedings were very enjoyable, and th-2 Like presented a charming spectacle. A competition for illuminated boats resulted in Mr Brunton and Mr Z. M. Hoar dividing the prize. The fireworks were in charge of Messrs G. Ward and E. Richards.
