BOROUGH ROAD WORKS.
PROTEST BY CR HUNTER. Cr Hunter referred to work now being carried on in Queen street in the way of tar-macadam at last night's Borough Council meeting. He wished to know where the expenditure of money in asphalting Queen s reet was going to stop, as he noticed that after only about 12 months the tar-macadam south of Perry street was being given a new top-dre«sing. The Mayor said he was not a road expert himself, but anyone could see that that portion of tar-macadamised road south of Perry street, which had received one top-dressing less than the northern strip was not equal to the latter portion. Cr Hunter said he objected to all this expenditure in Queen street, and contended that when the people out of the main street found that in winter time they had to get to their homes through mud up to their boot tops the Council would then hear more about the unwarrantably large expenditure in Queen street. There was too much money altogether being spent in about three leading streets, while other portions ot' the Borough went without any consideration at all. The Mayor replied that Queen street paid the bulk of the rates, and it was entitled to all it was having spent on it. Cr Hunter: But what about people in streets where there are no proper footpaths. The Mayor: Well, we would like to give them all footpaths, but where is the money to come from? Cr Hunter: That's just the point. The Council is making presentable about three streets in the whole borough out of the loan money left, and other parts of the town are suffering.
